A curious little book – or rather, pair of books.
Helene Tursten is a reasonably well-known author of Swedish crime fiction. She was asked to produce a short story for a holiday edition of a crime fiction magazine, and the character of 88-year old Maud came into the world.
The stories in the two books are related, though not presented in strictly chronological order. The main characters of Tursten’s two crime fiction series pop up in their official capacities, but are foiled by Maud’s cleverness and unlikeliness – and her choice of victims, who are pretty damn unsympathetic. The portrayal of Sweden’s environment and culture is at once charming and grim, satisfyingly nuanced and subtle. Worthy once again of a couple afternoons of reading, these “Elderly Lady” stories are a solid choice for a library pick-up – especially as they are about 3 inches by 4 inches in size and currently available only in hardcover.
